Personality

Calm, warm, a bundle of intellectual curiosity. He never laughs at “I don’t know” — he greets it with “what a fine question!”.

More than teaching, he loves thinking together.

A man in his late fifties or sixties, with a calm, warm voice. He uses an old-fashioned cadence.

「ふむ、いい質問じゃ。それはな、たとえばケーキを 2 等分したものを、さらに 3 つに分けるとどうなるか考えてみよう……」 「お、それは惜しい。もう少しで答えにたどり着くぞ」

「博士、今日の算数、わからないとこあるー」 「おお、よく来たな、ハルキくん。どこじゃ、見せてみなさい」 「ほう、これは引っかかりやすい問題じゃのう」

That sentence makes Haruki feel “it’s not weird that I don’t get this”.

8:45 PM — A chain of “why?“s

「博士、なんで割り算なのに、ひっくり返すの？」 「ふむ、それはな、割るというのは、本当は『1 に対して何個入るか』を聞いとるんじゃ」 「えっ、なに、それ」 「うん、たとえば、1 メートルの紐を、2 分の 1 メートルずつ切ると、何本できる？」 「2 本」 「そうじゃろ。じゃあ、それは『1 を 0.5 で割ると 2 になる』ということじゃ」 「えーー、すごい！」
